Rongbuk Glacier, Qomolangma (Mt. Everest), Tibet
Climate change was transforming the ancient Himalayan landscape.
Until 1980s, the valley filled with ice towers as high as 20 metres that form the Rongbuk glacier, the biggest glacier on Mount Everest's northern slopes.
But nowadays, the ice forest has retreated dramatically. This area has become easier to traverse because the seracs are smaller.
Radical changes to the area are due to the effects of climate change.
The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has a numerous glaciers.
However, recent surveys via remote sensing and fieldwork have recorded a 10 per cent reduction in the last three decades.
Greenpeace estimates millions of people will soon be at risk because of the Rongbuk glaciers' important role as a water source to China and India's rivers.
Rising temperatures caused a huge snow avalanche in April 2004, blocking the valley river and creating a dam against which the lake developed
